Net Neutrality–the concept that big users like Yahoo and Google should pay the same for the information superhighway access as little users do–seems to be holding sway. I’m not sure this is right, but maybe I’m missing something. Actually, it appears that the issue is that certain Web delivery systems, which grant free access over their cables to their subscribers, want to institute a surcharge for big users. Why not?
The problem is that Google and Yahoo would begin charging more for their paid search advertising, probably much more, if they had to pay to play, but the viewpoint of SBC Commnications and others is that these giants shouldn’t get a free ride like mom and pop.Â
SBC later became part of AT&T Inc., and, in order to win FCC approval of its merger with BellSouth, was mandated to drop its idea of a premium charge for the giants for two years. Google is worth what now, more than all the countries in South America? It should pay, but it would then punish its customers.
You can’t win, I guess, against the giants on either side of the issue.
