Le pour de mise au point de Web

J'ai établi comme les lieux de ce blog la remontrance pour ne pas dépenser l'argent en prétendus experts en matière de SEO mais pour le faire vous-même. There are a ton of people out there in cyberspace, and in physical locations, who would be more than happy to take your money, for instance, with the promise of optimizing your site when all they will do is add some keywords to your copy and to your metatags. How’s that sound for anywhere from $2,500 to $9,000 per site?

That’s exactly what you should avoid, not that people starting out in the Web world have that kind of money to throw around. However, you will still need to spend some money in developing your presence online and becoming successful at what you’re doing.

The question is, how much money and on whom and what?

I’d say that one indispensable resource is Aaron Wall’s SEO Book. This is truly a “don’t leave home without it” type of resource, which is continually being updated and which covers everything you’ll need to know to feel comfortable in the weird, wired world of Web competition (it’s truly a jungle out there and it’s easy to get lost).

I recently got an invitation to a Web “boot camp” in Las Vegas for $97. The price was good, but as I read through the promotional flyer, I kept asking myself, “Where does it say what they’re going to teach?” The copy was so general that they could literally begin with: “Okay, here’s a PC. Let’s show you how to turn it on. Tomorrow we’ll show you how to go online.” I’m sure it’s not that basic, but you get the point. Promise me something tangible before I lay down the dough (although a weekend in Vegas sounds okay in and of itself).

In addition to the SEO Book, you’ll come across countless offers for software, e-books, training sessions and so on. Evaluate each one carefully. Some of these items will prove invaluable to you because–let’s face it–we don’t have a lifetime to learn everything. If someone can show us some shortcuts by sharing their knowledge and experience, that’s probably worth the outlay of $50 or $100. I’d avoid at all costs anyone who wants you to pay a monthly fee, however, unless it’s for hosting your site (that’s another topic for another day, however).

I just decided to jump into Joomla and start building some e-commerce sites using that content management system (CMS) as the platform. Rather than futz around piecing the program together with all its add-ons and shopping cart and so on, I paid someone $600 to set it up for me. Now that the installation and design are complete, I’m playing around with the program and starting to get the site in order. (If you want to look at the site without anything yet for real on it, you can go to www.InfoItch.com.)

I’ll have more specific recommendations for you as I evaluate things myself, but for now you can rest assured that Aaron Wall’s book is well worth the money (as are the SEO tools he offers on his site).
