I still get all kinds of e-mail I didn’t request or subscribe to.  Is the practice of sending me this stuff legal?

Definitely yes and maybe no.  It all depends.

Now, to be a little less inscrutable, let me tell you what the law says.  The law says that you a) cannot have misleading subject lines, b) must make clear the nature of the e-mail, c) must include a physical address where the recipient can contact you, and d) must include an opt-out function in the e-mail.
