Google Has Seen the Future, and It’s Spelled F-R-E-E

Google is abandoning its pay site, Google Video, in favor of YouTube, a free, social sharing network, which it also owns.

Duh!  Did the Google high priests learn any lessons from this?

According to what they admitted to the press, they learned that they have to figure out a way to monetize YouTube without driving people away.  In other words, sell more ads on YouTube or something to that effect.

Maybe they can embed Google AdSense ads in each video.

That’s probably about as good an idea as they have so far.  I’m not sure why, other than sensing that the Internet future lies in video, that Google purchased YouTube in the first place.  It made much more sense for Fox to own it and add it to its stable of MySpace.

The great thing about Fox is that it’s so diversified that it doesn’t have to monetize the hell out of everything it owns.  To his credit, Rupert Murdoch, who just purchased the Wall Street Journal, is now considering making the WSJ Online free instead of a pay site.

You see.  There are viable options to the greed of Google.
