Content Is King: Part Umpteen Zillion

I keep returning to the most important ingredient in Web success (other than luck, of course), and that is content.

Content is even more relevant in this day and age of sophisticated Internet and search engine users.  When people go to their favorite search engine these days, they don’t just type in generic terms but use what are often called long-tail keyword phrases.

For instance, as Mark Jackson points out, searchers no longer merely type in "shoes" but something very descriptive like "tan Cole Haan loafers with tassels."

As Mark further notes, because people are using these long-tail searches, there’s no way–because there is not enough time or resources–to optimize every site for everything people might type into a search engine relating to that site’s content.  You’d need your proverbial army of a million monkeys typing infinitely on a million typewriters.

What’s the solution, then?  Let me quote Mark to drive home the point that "content is king":

The best way to optimize for today’s educated user is to: (a) write all site content in a very conversational and natural manner, and (b) create a site blog, press releases, and white papers or articles – i.e., consistently add fresh content.

Amen.
