I bring this in because I stumbled upon an article by Patrick Seton of SEOish.com, who is mostly obsessed with Google Gadgets, in which he argued clearly–and fairly persuasively–that worrying about backlinks, which Google counts qualitatively and quantitatively in determining Page Rank, is not the number-one or most important task of a site owner.
The number-one goal is, of course, to get traffic, and Page Rank doesn’t guarantee a top listing on the Google SERPs. In other words, Page Rank has little or no bearing on where your site falls within the search results for any particular search term relevant to your site.
So, if PR has nothing to do with gaining you traffic, what does?
Content, of course, along with simple on-page keyword and key phrase optimization.
Additionally, if you have content that attracts visitors–especially repeat visitors–then you are sure to gain natural linkbacks, which will raise your Google PR.
So again, content is king. Work on your content until the traffic builds up.
Another key to be discussed at another time: Building traffic through social bookmarking, the Web. 2.0 tactic.
