Set Your Sights Low

When I teach writing, which is my main source of income, I always advise the students to throw away all their standards, aim low, and just write.  Once they turn off their inner drive for perfection, which then manifests itself in them as their own worst critic and torturer, they can suddenly write easily.

Jennifer Laycock offers a similar rationale for those entering the world of Internet marketing and sales.

Without going into a lot of detail or explanation, let me summarize what she’s recommending.

You could, for instance, set up a Web site for “cheap airline tickets” and try to optimze for that phrase.  However, the competition would be immense, and you’d never crack the top ten SERPs.

So Jennifer recommends optimizing for what are called “long-tail phrases”  Thus “cheap airline tickets” becomes something like “cheap airline tickets to Hong Kong in the fall,” or some such.  You can definitely rank  quickly and high for such a long-tail phrase, she argues.  (Actually, the example is mine, not hers.)

Read her ”Five Reasons to Aim Low.”
