Google Spanks Sites That Sell Links

Furor has arisen because the Empire Has Struck Back and devalued many sites that sell links so they can share their high page rank (PR) for profit.

Guess what?  Some of those rankings aren’t so high anymore after Google systematically lowered many of them two positions or more.

What will be the collateral damage of all this?  No doubt, it will mean fewer link sales for these sites and maybe even cancellations.

However, at least one knowledgeable observer, Jill Whalen of HighRankings.com, seems to feel that the reduction is cosmetic only.  She subscribes to the theory, as many do, that there are two sets of Google page ranks–one that is displayed on the site and one that Google locks away like the secret formula for Krispy Kreme donuts.

Jill writes:

The gist of it is that the toolbar PageRank number has been reduced by a couple of points (or more) for many websites. The assumption is that this toolbar PR reduction is the same thing as a reduction in actual PageRank (the real thing that only Google knows about), and therefore this will affect the rankings of these websites.

She goes on to doubt that this is the case.  However, in cyberspace as elsewhere perception is everything.  Hell, I had my meager page rank lowered by one-third several months ago.

What’s a man to do?  LOL
