I’ve finished reading that allegedly secret insider Google document on how to rate Web sites that I posted yesterday, and I came away with a few interesting insights.

First, the most relevant (there’s that word again) insight I found was that pop-ups are not (aren’t) considered "malicious" if they can be closed without coming back. However, "if there are prompts that keep coming back," (p. 13) then that pop-up is "malicious" and the site should be so marked. I bet that’ll kill your organic search rankings in a nanosecond.

Anyway, as for the ratings, Google uses these classifications: Vital, Useful, Relevant, Not Relevant and Off-Topic.

Vital can be awarded only to the mother site, so to speak. For instance, if the search term is "Toyota Camry," the only vital page for that query is the Toyota.com page/section on the Camry. No one else can have a Vital rating except the owner of the search term. Additionally, some terms are so general (Google uses "diabetes" as an example) that they can’t have an owner, so no Vital rating can be awarded.

Useful is assigned to pages that are "highly satisfying, comprehensive, high in quality, and authoritative" (p. 6). Plus, they are neither too broad nor too specific, whatever that means.

Relevant is a "mini-me" version of Useful in that (p. 7) "Relevant pages might be less comprehensive, come from a less authoritative source, or cover only one important aspect of the query."

Not Relevant pages are "generally not helpful" (p. 7) but are marginally connected to the search term, perhaps through a link on the page to relevant information elsewhere.

Off-Topic means that, for instance, you searched for Paris Hilton the celebrity and came up with a travel page discussion the Hilton Hotel in Paris.

There you go. Perhaps this can help you optimize your pages for your keywords and key phrases.

(Final note: Google uses a Web-based system called EWOQ (acronym not defined in the document) for its raters to log in and receive their marching orders on which terms they will be searching.)
