Giants Seek Social Networking Platform Standard
Google, Yahoo and MySpace have joined forces to spearhead an effort to standardize platforms used for social networking sites, specifically for photo sharing and other operations.
The effort is being conducted under the umbrella of a newly formed nonprofit organization called the OpenSocial Foundation.
A standard pltform would make it easier for third-party designers to create across-the-board widgets and gadgets to work on all social networking sites.
Other participants include Friendster, hi5, LinkedIn, Ning, Orkut and Bebo. Conspicuously absent is Facebook, which is already widgeted to death.
OpenSocial begins operations on July 1.
