I am not a Web or SEO newbie, but I’m also not in the business of selling my services.

My experience with the for-sale SEO firms is you get a lot of boilerplate information coupled with some basic (and costly) pitches for their services. These people seem stuck on these strategies: Optimize your site for keywords, try to sign you up for an expensive backlinks program, offer a Web "architecture" redesign, try to convince you to let them run an AdWords campaign for you (costly again), and similar such pitches ad infinitum until they break your bank.

My experience with one such firm led me to research all relevant search engine optimization (SEO) topics and discover that the little that firm did, I could’ve accomplished in a few days–nay, a few hours–of work.

That’s why I dedicate this site to mom-and-pop SEO. Do as much as possible by yourself and pay only for what you absolutely need, or for what makes economic sense considering how long it might take you to do something. In short, if it will take you weeks or months to figure something out and do it yourself, you’re probably better offer hiring a specialist.

Scriptlance and Rent-A-Coder are two places to start if it’s site development, or you can e-mail me and I may know someone I’ve found who’s reputable. If it’s link-building, going on eBay or managing AdWords, I caution you to read up and do those things yourself. Spend your money on information; build the sweat equity yourself.

Should you purchase e-books and instructional videos and the like? I’d say yes, but again, do your research and buy only the reputable products. I’ve bought and continue to buy such resources, and I generally learn a lot each time. If you can afford such things, it will definitely speed up your learning curve, and the learning curve is the biggest challenge in cyberspace.

Good luck. I wish you the greatest success in the world of Web marketing, or blogging, or whatever it is you’re undertaking.
